☘ Ayurvedam - Madar

Aak  is also called ‘Madar’. The two species- red and white, are highly beneficial from an Ayurvedic point of view. Numerous medicines are manufactured using aak as an ingredient as it is a known cure for many diseases. It is also used as a domestic medicine to treat various disorders. It is highly poisonous and should be treated with great care. If you get the juice in your eyes it causes instant blindness. Suicides have used it and it is an abortifacient. Despite this it also has amazing healing powers and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It is native to Pakistan and parts of India.

In Hindu mythology, it is considered the favourite flower of Lord Shiva and hence its flowers are commonly offered to the deity. It is a belief that the flower makes the deity happy, subsequent to which he showers his blessings upon the worshippers.

There are 21 different types of leaves suggested for Ganesha Chaturthi Puja and popularly known as Patra Puja. Doing puja to Ganesh with 21 types of leaves is known as EKAVIMSATI Puja.Arka Patra (आक, Jilledu) is one of them.

This plant is going to give miraculous concentration, health and enthusiasm. The Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha have special blessings on keeping it in their home. Some roots of a tree more than three to four years old are almost found in the shape of Ganesha. If the shape of Ganapati ji is not clear, then an artisan can also be made. Regular worship and worship by keeping it in your worship gives you threesomes. In the scriptures, there is a law to praise Madar with this mantra. Keep the roots of Ravi Purushya Nakshatra wrapped in red cloth in the house, there will be happiness, peace and prosperity in the house. And if you do spiritual practice every day by sitting under the whitewash, it will quickly yield fruit. It has root in the house, there is never poverty and there is a flow of positive energy in the house. It is because of these amazing qualities that it is called modern 'Kalpavriksha'.

The Medicinal values of aak and its role in treating different diseases.Its leaves are a common ingredient in many ayurvedic products, herbal teas, remedial concoctions, and so on. It possesses healing properties and can be used to treat health problems. In diabetes treatment, aak is often used, as herbalists have said, they might have a hypoglycemic effect.

Medicinal properties:

Rasa (taste) – Katu (pungent) Tikta (bitter)

Guna (qualities) – Laghu (lightness), Ruksha (dryness), Teekshna

Vipaka – Katu – Undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion.

Veerya – Ushna – hot potency

Effect on Tridosha – Because of its hot potency, it balances Vata and Kapha.

Red type’s flower has bitter and sweet taste. Hence it balances Pitta and Kapha.

Medicinal uses of Madar plant : 

• Rheumatism,painfuljoints,mumps:

Tie lukewarm leaves on the affected joints.

• Skin blemishes:

Mix latex of the plant with haldi (3 gm) and apply on the affected facial areas.

• Leucoderma, vitiligo:

Take 20 ml latex of Aak plant, mix 5 g bavchi churna and 1/2 g Hartaal churna. Apply this on the affected areas.

• Piles :

Apply latex topically on piles.

• Pain in ears, Ear diseases, Infection in ear, pus in ear :

Take yellow aak leaves and wash well under running water. Dry them and extract 1/4 cup juice. Add 1/4 cup sesame oil. Also add 1/4 teaspoon of garlic, calamus, dalchini and hing. Cook this at low flame till all moisture is removed. Store in a bottle after cooling and use this as ear drops.

 Apply ghee on the leaves and put on fire for a few seconds. Extract the juice and put in ear.

• Deafness

Take yellow leaf of the plant and warm it. Squeeze to get juice. Put few drops in ears.

• Skin  diseases, ring worm, fungal infection, bite of poisonous insect, ulcers, tumors

Apply plant latex on the affected areas.

• Boils

Extract the latex of the plant. Mix with haldi(turmeric) and apply on the affected skin area.

• Wounds

Apply warmed leaves on wounds.

• Pain in tooth due to cavity

Rub latex on the affected tooth.

• Foot blisters

Apply latex of Madar plant.

• Cholera

Take clean root bark of the plant. Dry them and pulverise to make powder. Mix ginger juice and black pepper powder. Roll into tuablets of pea size. Take 1 tablet after every 2 hours with 1 teaspoon mint juice.

• Female infertility:

Take shade dried roots of white flower variety Madar. Pulverise it to get fine powder. Take this powder in a dose of 1-2 grams with a glass of Gau dugdha.

Other Health Benefits of Aak Flower – Crown Flower:-

Aak Leaves for diabetes and obesity:

Can there be anything which could heal the thing with just the touch? Rubbish thing, right! But it is true. All of you must have heard about ‘Aak leaves’. It is known by many names like Akwan, Madar, Swallow wort and many more. For many of us, it is a poisonous plant but its is not so.

• Take 2 full leaves of Aak plant.

• From the opposite side which is little rough, place it on your feel sole and wear socks.

• Repeat the process with new leaves for a week.

Root of Aak Effective in skin diseases:

The use of Aak Root in skin diseases gives excellent results by applying the paste of its root bark heals all types of boils, blood impurities and syphilis etc. The application of bark paste with Rassindur, Surma (Srotojan) and Sambharsing beneficial in case of elephantine foot disease.

When the ‘neemoli oil’ with bark powder is applied on skin, all types of ragged up skin diseases get quickly cured. With the use of its root bark, the enlarged up spleen and diseases arising out of it gets easily alleviated. The root bark powder when taken with saunf, rose flower petals or dalchini chases away chronic dysentery.

The flowers of listening treat the gas in the stomach, increase the appetite, and digestion. It kills the lack of appetite, excessive flow of saliva through the mouth, treats hemorrhoids, and cures cough and asthma for good. Acid leaves are well-hanged and wound and swollen.

* Precautions for Aak Flower leaves:

Calotropis is UNSAFE, especially in high doses. It contains chemicals that can interfere with heart function, particularly at high doses. It can cause serious side effects including vomiting, diarrhea, slow heartbeat, convulsions, and death.

It's not known whether it's safe to inhale calotropis smoke.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It's UNSAFE to use calotropis during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Avoid use.
